5. A brief look through the cake books on Amazon reveals startling differences between the way we look at pie and the way we look at cake. There may be one or two narrative books on cake; with pie, there was a lot more. People have strong feelings about pie, which I think is more of an everyday dessert. Cake is fancier. "Big time, shoot the dime," as my Aunt Mart would say.
